I recall ours was on a grade scale of A to F, and I certainly did not want to bring home a grade card with a D or F. My goal was a B or A, and would settle with a C.

5 Steps to Settle Your Debts on Your Own
Are you overburdened with overwhelmingly large debts? Are you looking for some debt advice by which you can reduce and eliminate your debt amount and pay it off? 1. Get a copy of your credit report: The first thing that you need to do is to get a copy of your credit report from any of the three credit reporting agencies. Check your credit score and see where you stand financially so that it becomes easier for you to approach your creditors.

4. Create a budget: Create a budget so that you can demonstrate your income and expenditure to your creditors. Show them how much settlement amount will be affordable for you. Generally creditors settle the amount by forgiving 40-60% of the total debt amount. You need to negotiate this amount so that you are actually able to pay off the debt after settlement.
5. Explain the creditors about their benefit: With a debt settlement you will benefit without doubt, but you also need to explain the creditors how they will benefit from a settlement. If they do not agree to settle your debts, then they will lose the total money. So it is better on their part, to settle the debts so that they at least receive some amount of the debt back.
